hello

Beans in Berlin

The spring is springing here in Berlin. We have a nice showing of buds and cherry blossoms and everyone has the sniffles.

As a part of trying to be more intentional, we are experimenting with new configurations of technology and memory. First step: getting our home darkroom set up again. These photos are from the last couple of months, taken with my grandpa’s old Canon AE-1 Program, on our hand-rolled expired fomapan 100.

Here is Jake loading up the paterson tank with some old black and white rolls we have been meaning to develop for the last couple of years.

We have a nice daily routine; it has been a relatively quiet and productive time. I am working on writing a book about early modern microscopy, arguing for the role of drawing in bringing new forms of life into focus in the seventeenth century. Jake is finishing up a year-long project building a tube mixer. Mack loves kita (german daycare) and when we drop him off the other children yell “MACK!” and they make silly faces at one another.

After kita, we usually go to the playground around the corner from our house. Mack will at some point take us in hand and walk to the cafe across the street, grab the high chair and drag it through the cafe to his preferred table, and hope we buy him a cookie or a croissant.

Soon things will be gearing up here, and we will be doing a lot of bouncing around and having lots of visitors again. In the meantime, I am enjoying the predictable rhythm, watching time pass, seeing Mack change subtly from day to day. As I try to spend less time plugged in, I appreciate the way that I have been able to find space for reflection in between our daily comings and goings.

But I also miss having a place to easily share photography and little details of our lives with friends and family. Enter: fomapam. A simple little letter with some love, from me to you.
